The modern and sophisticated security systems and nation defence all over the world are based on analysis of integrated data and on the exploitation and analysis of imagery and geospatial information to describe, assess and visually depict physical features and geographically referenced activities on the Earth.
Defense systems are based on site monitoring activities and on the analysis of the status of construction or critical infrastructure activities (factories, plant, linear features – railways, pipe- lines, power lines). Data are provided in a detailed change map to client-specific requirements (for example as input to a GIS), to build an operational target monitoring capability that issues alerts for significant changes over areas of interest, detects order-of- battle, and supports graphically enabled exploitation.
Defense activities count on border, dirt-road and track surveillance: these applications provide information about illegal traffic and other human activities. Based on interferometric processing of multi-temporal pairs or series, e-GEOS provides land-cover and land-use information. Through the joint analysis of coherence maps and SAR detected amplitude images, each target will be characterized by its behavior over time, revealing the different uses of the soil, highlighting agricultural fields, bare earth, uncultivated fields, woodland and forest (with particular ability to detect clear cuts), infrastructure and road networks.
The COSMO-SkyMed SAR constellation, exploited by e-GEOS as exclusive commercial distributor world wide, is a dual system and allows large-area mapping, regular monitoring and data acquisition day and night in all weathers.
